- The Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011 caused extensive damage in the Sanriku region. This building is part of the National Reconstruction Memorial Park, which was planned for the repose of the souls of the dead and to pass on their memories. On the "axis of prayer" that opens out to the sea, there is a water basin, a ceremony plaza, and a place for flower offering, and after crossing a humanitarian bridge, you will reach the "place overlooking the sea" on the seawall. The huge seawall is not merely a tsunami countermeasure facility, but rather a device for overcoming the disconnect between people and nature, and provides a space for quiet prayer.
