- Estonia, which regained its independence in 1991, held an international competition in 2005 for a new national museum. The winners were three young Paris-based architects from Italy, Lebanon, and Japan. They lifted a 72-meter-wide, 355-meter-long structure into the sky, as if to extend a military runway from the time of the Soviet occupation. A negative legacy with painful memories of the past was transformed into a symbol of the future of the nation-state.
