- The main stadium for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be built on the site of the former National Kasumigaoka Stadium, which was the main venue for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. A new proposal was selected in December of the same year, with the height reduced to 47 meters. The roof trusses are composed of a hybrid of wood and steel, and the overlapping eaves, made of wood from 47 prefectures with a width of 105 mm and arranged according to their orientation, weave a human scale into the huge facility. The "forest in the sky," an intermediate area under the eaves, will serve as an 850-meter walking path for citizens, opening the stadium to the city. However, the Olympic and Paralympic Games were postponed for one year due to a new type of coronavirus infection, and were held without spectators in July 2021.
