Urban Farm
The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative

- This project will utilize vacant lots, building rooftops, and other waste land in the north end of downtown Detroit, which has been devastated by the continuing exodus of population due to the decline of the auto industry and the deterioration of public safety in the city, to create an urban agrihood that will produce over 50,000 pounds of agricultural products. A non-profit organization comprised of volunteers will take the lead in planning the project, which will include a community center, café, and commercial kitchen, using urban agriculture as an educational platform. The project integrates natural cycles and resident participation to create a model of "food and urban renewal.
