Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2002
Toyo Ito + Cecil Balmond
- Outline
- Designed in collaboration with Cecile Balmond of Arup from the early stages of design. A network of straight lines, derived from an algorithm that expands and rotates a square, forms a continuous roof, walls, and floor. The network of flat bars are designed to prevent buckling, and the polygonal surfaces are inlaid with aluminum and glass panels to create a checkerboard pattern.
