Shonandai Culture Center
Itsuko Hasegawa
- Outline
- This is a cultural complex that puts into practice Hasegawa's concept of "architecture as second nature. While most of the functions are buried underground, four cosmic spheres and a group of 2.8-meter square small roofs surround a plaza with a babbling stream above ground. A rooftop walkway with a variety of plants traverses between them, creating the aspect of a natural system. The open proposal competition, in which Fumihiko Maki and Arata Isozaki served as judges, also attracted attention. The development of a workshop with the participation of residents was also proposed.
