- This original architecture, reminiscent of white sails, was completed 17 years after the 1956 design competition. The roof, the symbol of the form, was structurally and constructively realized through the collaboration of Utzon and Ove Arup, who gave the roof, which had been drawn freehand in the competition phase, a geometric definition using parabolic curves, and finally adopted a spherical geometry. It is also a pioneer in environmental architecture, having developed a system in the 1970s that cools the building by using circulating seawater.
