SOWAKA

Outline
A 100-year-old sukiya-style building formerly used as a ryotei (Japanese-style restaurant) in Yasaka, Gion, Kyoto, which was in danger of demolition, was renovated into an accommodation facility with 11 rooms in the main building and 12 rooms in the new building. While ensuring modern comfort and functionality, the project left most of the culturally valuable parts of the building as they were, and preserved the unique design of the ryotei and its relationship to the garden.
