House in Wakabayashi

Outline
This residence is located on the grounds of a temple dating back to the Edo period, and its design integrates daily life while establishing a connection with the adjacent existing community hall. By orienting the facade at an angle so that it opens from the front road toward the temple grounds, the boundary is softened. The outdoor and indoor earthen floors, which had an existing 600mm height difference, were stepped in 100mm increments to create a continuous circulation path from the front road to the community hall. The eaves were extended horizontally to match the height of the community hall’s eaves, creating a visual connection with the other buildings on the temple grounds.
