House in Nikko

Outline
This is a house for a family of five built along a road in an old inn town. The shape of the sloping roof was determined by the angle of sunlight, the direction of the prevailing wind, and the volume of the surrounding buildings. Wind taken in from the south exits through the high side light (roof window) at the top of the north face. The roof beams are made of 38mm thick x 184-238mm high 2x2 timber at a pitch of 455mm. The meeting room next to the entrance is open to the neighbors and serves as a buffer between the town and the residential area.
