MIKAWAYA HONTEN RENOVATION PROJECT
ARAKI+SASAKI ARCHITECTS
- Outline
- A sake brewery, consisting of a main house and a storehouse and built approximately 100 years ago, was renovated into a restaurant. To make the renovation while preserving the spaces of the existing buildings—which are Registered Tangible Cultural Properties—the structures were designated as preserved buildings, exempting them from the Building Standards Act, while repairs were carried out to ensure safety standards equal to or exceeding those required by law. Located on Wakamiya-ōji Street, which runs from Kamakura Station to Tsurugaoka Hachimangū Shrine, this is the first case nationwide of a registered tangible cultural property located within a fire prevention zone that has been exempted from the Building Standards Act.
