Topcon Building 2 Renovation Project

Outline
Renovation of the headquarters and factory of Topcon, a company specializing in optical equipment. The existing buildings were designed by architect Mikishi Abe—known as the “Concrete Doctor”—and completed in 1935 and 1937. As part of the renovation, the building’s primary function shifted from manufacturing to technical development and office space. A new canopy extending over the courtyard, 41.1 meters wide, was designed with the shape of the lenses manufactured by the client as its motif. The first-floor area adjacent to the canopy was converted from the former workshop into a large auditorium and a cafeteria.
