Shinjuku Sumitomo Building Re-Innovation Project

Outline
This is the realization of a 25-year project to convert an open space in an existing building completed in 1974 into a completely indoor space with a large roof over it. The plaza surrounding the building, which is located in the center of a large district in Nishi-Shinjuku, is an open, pillarless, flat-roofed space with a sense of openness, while being completely air-conditioned. The existing frame and structure were separated, and the renovation was completed while the building was still in use. It is a transformation of the public space of the city in accordance with the transition of the times, creating a lively atmosphere in normal times and serving as a disaster prevention base in times of disaster.
