Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture
MASS Design Group
- Outline
- Rapid development and a rapidly growing population have led to severe food shortages in Rwanda, and there is a need to establish sustainable agriculture in the country. This agricultural research institute is a 1,300-hectare site with classrooms, houses, and barns, constructed with natural materials, 96% of which are sourced domestically. Solar arrays provide electricity, many buildings are naturally ventilated, and the soil and water are protected through sustainable extraction of lake water and wastewater reuse. A learning center where "sustainability in the classroom" = "sustainability on campus every day.
