- The bridge, which had been a symbol of Mostar since its completion in 1566, was destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1993, and was rebuilt in its original form in 2004, including the distortion of the original construction. The bridge was rebuilt in 2004 in its original form, including the distortions of the original construction, using rubble and stones from the same quarry, and reproducing the original composition of the mortar. The reconstruction was intended to symbolize the reunification of the city and the country, as well as peace and reconciliation.
