Santa Caterina Market

Outline
Renovation of the municipal market in the old town of Barcelona. The market was reorganized while preserving some of the existing buildings that occupy a large block in a densely built-up area, and connecting the buildings to the street. The market was reorganized as a public space that integrates the surrounding residential neighborhoods and activities. The 5,500 m2 steel beam and wooden vault roof that covers the existing building and creates an atrium space is supported by a 42 m span steel beam in the center. The colorful "tablecloth" roof is finished with hexagonal tiles in 67 different colors.
