Meiso no Mori Municipal Funeral Hall

Outline
A funeral hall by Toyo Ito and structuralist Mutsuro Sasaki. The thin, smooth roof, with repeated undulations of various sizes, was optimized mechanically through sensitivity analysis, and is supported by twelve thin conical pillars that resemble icicles. The curved ceiling allows soft light to penetrate the interior. Formwork fabrication based on cross sections cut from a mathematically defined free-surface model enabled the construction of a smooth roof.
