- Commissioner Arata Isozaki focused on the devastation of the city itself, which was severely damaged by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. In response, Takashi Miyamoto covered the walls with black-and-white photographs of the destroyed city, Yoshiaki Miyamoto piled a large amount of earthquake debris all over the floor of the exhibition room, and Shubu Ishiyama installed more than a dozen computer devices amidst the rubble that continuously played the sound of broadcasts immediately after the earthquake. The Golden Lion Award for the best pavilion was given to the work of Yoshiaki Miyamoto and Shubuke Ishiyama.
