- The Bibliothèque Nationale, named after then President François Mitterrand, was built on the site of a former railroad yard purchased by the City of Paris in the redevelopment district on the left bank of the Seine. As part of the Paris Grandes Projets, Pierre MICCERONI was in charge of the overall concept for the redevelopment of the east side of Paris, and Perrault designed the new Bibliothèque Nationale to connect with the Bercy district on the opposite bank. The open book-like towers surrounding the four corners of the sunken garden in the center of the site and the promenade that allows free access to the library are laid out.
