Benesse House Museum / Oval
Tadao Ando
- Outline
- This is a "stay-and-go" museum with accommodation facilities, more than half of whose volume is buried underground, located on a small hill at the southern tip of Naoshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea. The Benesse House Museum opened in 1992, and in 1995, an accommodation building (oval) with an oval motif was added as an annex to the Benesse House Museum. Since then, Ando has continued to create architecture that fuses nature and contemporary art, including the Minamidera Naoshima House Project No. 2 (1999), the Chichu Art Museum (2004), which permanently exhibits works by Monet and others, the Lee Ufan Museum (2010), and the Naoshima New Art Museum, which will open in 2025.
