- The Barbican Estate is a cultural complex located in the Barbican Estate, a pioneer of modernist urban planning in which the Greater London area took the lead in redevelopment of a section of the city that had been bombed during World War II. Planning for the Barbican Estate began in 1957, and the residential portion was constructed between 1969 and 1976, while the Barbican Center was built between 1971 and 1982. The sculptural brutalist architecture contrasts with the natural setting of the lake and gardens, and is positioned as the core of a city undergoing a cultural and public revival.
