- In his book "Pattern Language" (1977), Alexander proposed a method that allows users to participate in the design process by preparing in advance the patterns of spaces and events that lie behind a harmonious and lively city or building. The first such practice in Japan was the Yeonggakuen School (1985). Based on the typology of environmental components extracted from interviews with all teachers and some students, more than 20 buildings were constructed, including classroom buildings, a large auditorium, and a gymnasium.
