- The 1964 Tokyo Olympics venue. The First Gymnasium (lower left) is a suspended structure of high-tensile cables and steel. The two main cables on the roof were deformed into a spindle shape to provide top-lighting and to house equipment. The second gymnasium (bottom middle) has a suspended roof structure with one main tower supporting the spiral-shaped main pipes. The air vents are also integrated with the space, and Kenzo Tange (design), Yoshikatsu Tsuboi (structure), and Uichi Inoue (facilities) collaborated on the architecture. Yoshikatsu Tsuboi said, "Beauty lies in the neighborhood of rationality.
