- Located on the west side of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, this building is the center of China's national political events and international conferences. It is one of the "Ten Great Architectures" built in Beijing to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The design and construction of the Ten Great Architectures proceeded at an astonishingly rapid pace, with the decision to construct the building made on September 5, 1958, and construction completed approximately one year later, in September 1959.
