- The city was planned as the new capital of Brazil. The city was designed by architect Lucio Costa, who was selected through a competition, in the shape of an airplane spreading its wings on the shore of Lake Paranoa, a man-made lake. The public buildings (upper left: National Assembly Building, upper right: Presidential Palace, lower left: Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Building, lower right: Brasilia Cathedral) were designed by Oscar Niemeyer, and were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
