- This house was built under the material controls imposed during the Second World War (with a building area of less than 30 tsubo). The large gabled roof and wooden flooring give the house a Japanese-style appearance, but the lofted living room is clearly a Modernist space, with 90-degree rotating doorways and other features that suggest a trial-and-error approach to creating an expansive living space even under difficult conditions.
