- Outline
- It was erected to commemorate the unidentified British and South African soldiers who lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme. The 45-meter high monument bears the names of as many as 70,000 soldiers who died in the battle. It also serves to preserve the memory of the Anglo-French war, and in front of the monument is a small cemetery with an equal number of Commonwealth and French graves.
