- Construction began in 1917, with the first large building (Building B) completed in 1918, and the complex of facilities completed in 1928, the largest factory complex in the world at the time. The steel trusses were used to minimize the number of spans and materials while achieving a column-free space, and roof forms were attempted to provide light and ventilation. Along with Ford's Pierce and Highland Park plants (left photo), Kahn's design, which pursued structural and economic rationality, had an influence on modernist architects.
