- In an article in Fruehricht No. 4 (1922), the first publication of the proposed plan, Mies begins by stating that "only a skyscraper under construction shows bold, structural thought," and that he chose the transparent material "glass" to reveal the steel framework. Later, Mies' interest shifted from the transparency of glass to its reflective qualities, and his initial goal of a bare construction site was drowned out by the brushstrokes of the reflective glass surface. What will Mies think when he sees the modern city of a hundred years from now, a forest of glass skyscrapers, which he had dreamed of with a piece of paper and a model? Can he see through them the unfinished skyscrapers that are the traces of his youthful dreams?
