- Godin, an industrialist, echoed Charles Fourier's concept of the phalanster, a communal living space that encompassed living, production, education, and entertainment. Designed to accommodate approximately 2,000 people, the building includes three courtyard-style residential buildings, a school, a theater, a bathhouse, a factory, and stores.
