Outline: The house stands at the very end of a cul-de-sac in a residential neighborhood. The western side of the lot is shaded by dense trees on the neighboring property. Taking into account the location—surrounded by other homes—and the region’s climate, which experiences extremely high summer temperatures even by Japanese standards, we sought to minimize exterior openings while carefully guiding natural light into the home. The structure features a gabled roof spanning a gate-like cross-section, with a passageway on the ground floor dividing the space north to south; the various rooms are connected via the second floor. A void shaped like an inverted T runs through the center of the house, allowing light to pass through while promoting heat transfer and ventilation.
