Engawa Attachment in Kokai
yabashi architects
- Outline
- An addition to a residence located alongside a shopping district. Taking advantage of the structural characteristics of the existing light-gauge steel-frame house, an L-shaped opening was created, and an L-shaped wooden volume—resembling a 1,380mm-wide engawa—was attached to it. The floor levels of the existing and expanded sections are offset, creating a gentle transition between the two levels. Furthermore, the boundary between the existing and expanded sections is defined by a double set of curtains—one with vertical stripes and the other with diagonal stripes—allowing for flexible adjustment of the relationship between the two spaces.
