NKS ARCHITECTS
Outline
This international passenger terminal was built by renovating an existing warehouse at Sasebo Port in order to open a regular service route with Busan Port in South Korea and to attract international passenger ships. The terminal is 100 meters long and is scheduled to open in April 2015. In converting the existing warehouse, which has a ceiling height of up to about 12 meters, it was necessary to create an environment with improved thermal insulation and high air-conditioning efficiency while reducing the load on the existing structure. A steel-framed "ceiling grid" with a beam of approximately 2.7 m was inserted in the center of the building to partially reduce the ceiling height and create a second-floor floor and deck.
