SHIGERU AOKI ARCHITECT & ASSOCIATES
Outline
We refinished a 34-year-old civic center that has the only proscenium hall in the city. We renewed the aging structure, seismic retrofitting, and audiovisual equipment in the hall. All the stand-alone regulations were retroactively applied, and the collective regulations were proved to be ineligible. In addition, various extensions were attempted in response to the current regulations, in which the structural form differs according to the extent of the area of the extension relative to the existing. The front R-shaped wall of the extension is separated by an expansion joint and has its own foundation because the extension area exceeds 50m2 (and is less than 1/2 of the existing total floor area).
