FUKUSHIMA MARCH 11 MEMORIAL PARK, NATIONAL MEMORIAL HALL

Outline
Reconstruction Memorial Parks and National Memorial and Commemoration Facilities in Fukushima Prefecture, which experienced the compound disaster of the tsunami and nuclear accident caused by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. In March 2012, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism compiled the “Basic Guidelines for Earthquake Disaster Reconstruction Memorial Parks,” including Iwate Prefecture (Takata Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park and National Memorial Facility; see this magazine, 2001), Miyagi Prefecture (Ishinomaki Minamihama Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park and National Memorial Facility; ibid., 2001), and Fukushima Prefecture. The National Memorial and Commemoration Facility is located within the Fukushima Prefecture Reconstruction Memorial Park, which spans both Futaba Town and Namie Town. From the top of the green hill, visitors can overlook the earthquake-damaged ruins surrounding the park and the towns undergoing reconstruction, while the interior of the hill houses a space dedicated to memorial and commemoration.
