MYOKO HOTEL

Outline
A single-unit rental hotel in the Myoko Highlands of Niigata Prefecture, an area known for heavy snowfall. The project involved renovating a 25-year-old wooden house with a high foundation—a common feature in the surrounding area. The garden featured a “snow-melting pond” that collected hot spring water from Mount Myoko and was used to melt snow. As part of the renovation, equipment was installed to utilize the hot spring water—after it had been used for snow melting—to melt snow along the approach path; the existing structure was also reinforced and downsized. A newly added “living terrace” extends from the main house out into the garden.
