- This is an extension and renovation project of the oldest existing public art museum in Japan (opened in 1933). The main entrance is located in the basement of the former main entrance, which was excavated like a slope, and the flow line is connected to the Japanese garden on the opposite side, creating an east-west axial space freely open to the urban space. While preserving the historical architecture of the museum, it also meets the needs of a modern art museum, such as a service function to accommodate the rapidly increasing number of tourists and an exhibition space suitable for diversifying artworks. The new layers inserted into the layers, while maintaining the "layers" that have been laid down over and over since the museum's founding, form a smooth continuity with the past, while at the same time creating a sense of disconnection.
