Schocken Department Store
Erich Mendelsohn
- Outline
- Mendelsohn designed several Schocken department stores in Stuttgart and elsewhere, the largest of which is shown here. The curved massing facing the intersection retains a hint of Expressionism in its treatment. Horizontal windows striped across the curved façade provide daytime lighting, but at night the lighting creates a band of light that creates a new era of commercial facilities.
