Schindler House
Rudolf Schindler
- Outline
- Schindler was born in Vienna at the turn of the century, moved to Chicago, attracted by Frank Lloyd Wright, and eventually ended up in Los Angeles. This building was constructed shortly thereafter. The open spaces that respond to California's climate, the ad hoc setting of concrete and canvas panels, and the complexities of overlapping and displaced spaces foreshadow the architecture that was to follow on the West Coast of the United States. The house is designed to house two couples, including the artist, by combining two L-shapes, each surrounding a separate garden, and placing a common kitchen at the connection between them.
