Nihombashi Mitsukoshi Main Store
Yokogawa Komusho
- Outline
- In 1904, Mitsukoshi issued the "Department Store Manifesto" and in 1914 completed Japan's first department store equipped with the latest facilities, including an escalator. Denji Nakamura, who was in charge of the department store, reported the results of his inspection tours of the United Kingdom and the United States, but what was adopted was a French-style department store with a large atrium. The atrium was reduced in size along with the sales floor area, but was redeveloped in 1935 (right). René Proux was involved in the interior design when the building was enlarged and remodeled in 1935.
