Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Building

Outline
The American archetype of the high-rise department store, with its stacked homogeneous reference floors. Guidion's "Space, Time, and Architecture" (1941) emphasized the modernist upper elevation, known as the Chicago Frame, but the lower floors are richly decorated to attract people. The first phase of construction was completed in 1899.
