The Crystal Palace
Joseph Paxton
- Outline
- Temporary building for the World's Fair in London. The exposition, which attracted a great deal of attention, was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the progress of architectural technology. Under the direction of Paxton, a landscape architect known for his greenhouse designs, a large space was constructed using new materials such as steel and glass as the main structural members. It is also important in that it presented a pre-fabrication method in which standard materials are mass-produced and assembled on site.
