MIKAWA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL & MIKAWA JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Outline
An elementary school building and an indoor playground were combined on the site of an existing junior high school with the integration of three nearby elementary schools. The existing junior high school was renovated at the same time. The designer was selected through an open proposal process by Kumamoto Art Police. The area of the new building was reduced by creating a shared space between the elementary and junior high schools in consideration of the operation of the school. The roof structure, which changes its angle in accordance with the roof slope, is made of "bundled laminated timber". All of the locally produced cedar lumber has different joints in millimeters, and the carpenters manually inked the numbers shown in the CAD drawing.
