M’s House in Minamitanabe

Outline
The building stands behind a row of row houses in a densely populated residential area of Osaka. It is situated on a narrow, elongated lot—which was once part of the row houses’ backyard—and is oriented perpendicular to the row of houses. Along a north-south street set back approximately 1,200 mm from the property line, five 150 × 450 mm wooden posts are arranged in a single row with a 4,050 mm span. Using this row of posts as a reference, the design of the interior and exterior spaces and the placement of openings was determined by adjusting the structure—either projecting toward the neighboring lot or pulling it back toward the interior—in response to the living conditions on both the residence side and the neighboring lot side.
