Chikudo-An: Earth Sauna

- A two-story wooden barn in Kamanuma-kita village, Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture, was renovated into a sauna and living room. 1st floor walls were covered with woodblock and plaster, 2nd floor walls with cedar shingles painted with astringent sumi ink. The existing Japanese-style roof tiles were retained. To support the heavy slab construction on soft ground, traditional geotechnical foundations were learned, pine piles were driven, and the slab construction was placed on top of the surrounding hardened broken stones.
