House in Imaicho

Outline
This project involved the renovation of a 200-year-old machiya (townhouse) built using the Ishiba construction method in Imai-cho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, which has been selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. While adapting the house to modern lifestyles, we solved the problems peculiar to traditional machiya houses, and reinforced it against earthquakes by arranging an earthquake-resistant frame combining lattice walls and facing materials, while making use of the existing framework.
