- A research facility built in a public-private regional partnership on the new Aobayama campus of Tohoku University. It uses synchrotron radiation generated by bending accelerated electron beams with magnets to visualize materials on a nano (one-millionth of a millimeter) scale. The experimental area is separated from other areas by an expansion joint (EXP.J) around the floor to prevent the transmission of vibrations from the building.
