- The building consists of 13 structural "tubes," thin steel sandwich honeycomb "plates," façade, and skin. The tubes combine structure, facilities, and flow lines to create a highly open and fluid space without conventional columns or walls. The Mediatheque, a coined term meaning "media box," is a complex of programs including a library and galleries, and was selected in a design competition chaired by Arata Isozaki in March 1995. Mutsuro Sasaki designed the structure, and Takahashi Kogyo, a shipbuilding firm, participated in the construction.
