Stockholm Public Library

Outline
Symbolizes the transitional period from neoclassicism to modernism. The building is a mixed brick, steel, and RC structure. The clear composition of the rectangular rooms surrounding the 24-meter-high reading room and the dramatic transition from a dark, narrow stairwell to a large, bright space were influenced by Egyptian architecture and 18th-century Bray. The user-centered management method was the result of a study tour in the U.S., and was a pioneering example of public architecture representing the Scandinavian welfare state philosophy.
