- The rikuzentakata city museum (opened in 1959) and the sea and shell museum (opened in 1994), both of which were damaged in the 2011 great east japan earthquake, were combined into a new, raised district. the museum exhibits the collection, which was washed away by the tsunami and designated as a cultural property after desalination work, and also continues the desalination work.
